Hi everyone,

I'm new to this group, so hopefully my question is relevant!

I have a student who uses JAWS screen reading software and we're having problems accessing links.
I did a short videohttps://youtu.be/4D9tetj_MiI to demonstrate the problem (link to YouTube).
If anyone can suggest a solution, or let me know how I can report the problem to D2L, I would greatly appreciate it!

Hi. Thanks for writing, this message is totally relevant, and I'm so happy I have an easy answer! I love easy answers.

The reason the assessments link isn't showing up in the links list is because it's not actually technically a link in JAWS's mind. All of the link groups are actually buttons. Your user of JAWS will notice that it will say assessments button, resources button, communication button, etc. So those items can be reached either by pulling up a form fields list with insert f5, or pressing b to move between buttons, or there is a buttons list in JAWS, control + JAWS key + b.

The reason we didn't make those groups links is because they don't actually go anywhere, they open a group of items. I know it can be a little strange to get used to for the first time, especially since the links that are collapsed in those buttons used to be out there for the picking.

Let me know if that helps.

Carin

Hi Carin,

Thank you for replying!  I just finished an appointment with this student and we tried your suggestions (using 'b' to scroll through the buttons, using insert f5 to bring up form fields, and using ctrl+ins+f5 to show the buttons list).  All of them allowed us to see the assessments button but we were not able to actually click on it to expand the menu and choose quizzes or dropbox.  Is there something special I need to be doing?  It's causing the student lots of frustration because now he can hear that the assessments button is there, but is completely unable to access it using the keyboard.

I look forward to hearing your feedback, I'm learning so much working with this student!  I welcome any suggestions :)

I haven't had a chance to do another video, but if that's helpful, I can try to do it tomorrow.

Andrea
