Subject: RE: [d2l-a11y] Dragon NaturallySpeaking in Short Answer boxes
Hi Jeffrey,
Carin might also be interested in this answer In re using Dragon NaturallySpeaking in online quizzes.
It is been my experience that Nuance has stopped supporting the plug-in for dictation with Dragon NaturallySpeaking in the Firefox browser. One possibility is to try loading Brightspace using either Chrome or Internet Explorer to see if the dictation works better with a different browser. If that's not the case, then the answer is to use the TOOLS menu in Dragon, then select OPTIONS, then select MISCELLANEOUS, and finally double check to make sure the checkbox for "use the dictation box for unsupported applications" is checked. That's kind of a pain in the neck, because your student will have to use a text box for the dictation, then either click insert text or text boxes with Brightspace.
Not as seamless as it ought to be, right? It is getting better, though, with every iteration of Dragon we get. I personally find it extremely inconvenient not to be able to use Firefox & Dragon effectively because Firefox is my preferred browser. On the other hand, Dragon is too important to my ability to do business & communicate, so Firefox is had fall by the wayside. From what I have heard, Nuance does not appear to be interested in reengineering any of the plug-ins for Firefox. Will have to see what develops.
Try either one or both of the suggestions and let us know if either one or neither one works. I'll be happy to help troubleshoot it.
Cheers,
Wink

Subject: [d2l-a11y] Dragon NaturallySpeaking in Short Answer boxes
We have a student who says he is unable to use Dragon NaturallySpeaking to enter his responses in the short answer boxes of quizzes. Has anyone else seen this problem? Any suggestions that might help him be able to use his speech-to-text software to fill out short answer boxes for quizzes in Brightspace?
I have to believe this has been tested. I know he's not using the Lockdown Browser, but I don't know what browser he is using.
